New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter told the New York Post on Sunday night that he has interest in owning a team after he retires.

Jeter, who is retiring at the end of the season, is not interested in managing a team but does want a stake in a major-league franchise.

"That's the next goal, buddy," he said at his 18th annual Turn 2 Foundation dinner in New York. "Calling the shots, not answering to someone, that's what interests me.

"I'd like to think I would be a good (owner)."

Jeter said he has not formally discussed the possibility with anyone yet, but plans to after the season. He said he is influenced by the late former Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, except that he would "probably be a little bit more behind the scenes ... but I learned a lot of things from the Boss."

It is not clear if Jeter would want a piece of the Yankees or a different team, or how much control he would seek.
