Without a doubt the hottest hitter in the majors early this season has been Gianacarlo Stanton, which is something of a surprise.

Not because of his skill level, which places him among the elite in baseball, but because he is still being pitched to carefully. Wouldn’t you with Garrett Jones and Casey McGehee up next? However, the young Marlins stud is now apparently tired of sitting back and taking.

According to Fangraphs stats, Stanton’s walk rate is way down from last year (14% to 9%) because he is swinging at more pitches out of the strike zone (37%, up from 30%). However, he is actually making more contact with those fringe pitches more often - 69%, up from his career 49 - and making solid contact at that, with more line drives and fly balls, fewer grounders, but with a slightly inflated .368 BABIP. The result of this aggressive new approach is a .328 AVG, six homers and an MLB-leading 26 RBIs (seven more than anyone else heading into Saturday’s action).
