The National League Central is one of baseball’s classiest divisions.

OK, it does have Lyin’ Ryan Braun. But, then, nobody said it was perfect.

Oh, yeah, and then there is Jhonny Peralta.

Evidently, cheaters can ever prosper. Peralta, 31, returned from a suspension for performance-enhancing drugs to help the Tigers in the playoffs. Then he received a four-year, $53-million contract from the Cardinals.

But, other than that, it’s classy — or, as classy as it gets in this, baseball’s winter of discontent.

Braun got off to a promising comeback from his own suspension this spring, belting a homer on the second pitch.

He got the bum’s rush last season when he was suspended for the final 65 games. Along with Peralta, they are a manifestation of the unscrupulousness, the skepticism, and the ambivalence that permeates the game today.
