St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny is "embarrassed" following Monday's revelation that pitcher Carlos Martinez's Twitter favourites list, which is public, had links and images to hardcore pornography.
"We're embarrassed and he's embarrassed," Matheny told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch at the Cardinals' spring training home in Jupiter, Fla.
The Cards manager warned his players for the third time Tuesday to be vigilant and conscientious on social media after Deadspin.com posted a video showing the long list of porn on his Twitter account.
The team was unable to contact Martinez until Monday evening, helping him remove the images.
Matheny spoke privately with Martinez about what he does on the social media site can be very concerning if viewed by a young fan.
"I'm not trying to shove my morality down anybody's throat," Matheny said.
"I've made that very clear. But I also need these guys to understand that it's not just me that they need to be concerned about. There are a bunch of young guys that absolutely admire these guys and everything that they do.
"Realize -- is this something you'd want your kids to see? Is this something that you want to be known for? Is this how you want to be remembered? I think the days of (retired NBA player) Charlie Barkley saying he's not supposed to be a role model -- that's garbage. If that's what you want to do then you should have been a computer programmer sitting in your flipflops at home somewhere."
The Cardinals have not asked Martinez to halt his use of Twitter or to take down his account.
"Anything that you do right now is one fraction of a second away from being all over the world," Matheny said.
