Of all the surprising elements that have combined to turn the Boston Red Sox from a collection of bums one year to contenders for a pennant the next, none is more serendipitous than the transformation of Koji Uehara into an elite closer.

Even when the Red Sox ran into trouble at the back end of their bullpen with injuries and non-performance earlier this year, Uehara, signed as a free agent for $4.25 million last winter, was hardly their first choice to step up and slam the door at the end of games.
