They are the two most successful National League franchises.

Yet when the Los Angeles Dodgers meet the St. Louis Cardinals in the opener of their best-of-seven National League Championship Series on Friday night at Busch Stadium, it will be only their second meeting in 45 years of NLCS play.

The first one provided one of those scoreboard moments for Busch.

It wasn’t Joe Carter off Mitch Williams or Robbie Alomar going deep off Dennis Eckersley, but it was more dramatic than Ed Sprague’s homer off Jeff Reardon.

Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda had closer Tom Niedenfuer on the mound with a one-run lead and two out in the ninth, after a Willie McGee single and an Ozzie Smith walk. Jack Clark hit the first pitch for a three-run homer.
