A prayer circle formed around the pitcher’s mound at Tropicana Field on Saturday after Tampa Bay Rays righty Alex Cobb took a sharply hit line drive to the head.
In the top of the fifth inning, Kansas City Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer connected on a 2-1 fastball that left little time for the 25-year-old Cobb to avoid the ball.
The ball caromed off the right side of Cobb’s head as he crumbled on top of the mound while grabbing his head and violently kicking his feet.
The Rays later stated that Cobb remained conscious before and after he was carted out of the park with his head in a stabilizer.
He was taken to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg, Fla., for further observation.
Toronto Blue Jays lefty J.A. Happ was involved in a similar play earlier in the season at the same stadium.
