The Aussie Telegraph reported Wednesday that the Los Angeles Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks will open the 2014 season in Sydney, the sixth time a competitive MLB game will have been staged outside the U.S.

According to the report, the Dodgers and D-Backs will play the first two games of the season at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

The Telegraph described the news as the biggest internationally recognized event in Australia since the 2003 Rugby World Cup.

"Sydney has a history of hosting significant baseball games at the SCG, with the Chicago White Sox playing against a combined NSW team in 1914," Australian sports minister Graham Annesley said.

"The SCG will be transformed into an MLB field, with the construction of an infield clay area, pitcher's mound, dugouts and additional grandstand."

The Seattle Mariners and Oakland A's opened the 2012 season in Japan.
