Wunderkind Bryce Harper is gradually recuperating from a knee injury sustained last month.

Harper “hasn’t resumed baseball activities,” tweeted CSN Washington’s Mark Zuckerman Thursday, but “hopes to go on rehab assignment early next week.”

Harper, a Washington Nationals outfielder who scooped up 2012 National League rookie of the year honours, has an inflamed left knee. The 20-year-old phenom hasn’t played since May 26.

Monday, he is scheduled to see renowned sports doctor James Andrews.

MARLINS ADD TO UNTOUCHABLE LIST

Major League Baseball’s worst team, the Miami Marlins, have padded a list of players they are unwilling to part with.

Miami pitchers Steve Cishek and Mike Dunn will not be moved before the trade deadline on July 31, according to MLB.com.

The Marlins, dead last in the MLB with a 16-44 record ahead of Thursday night, have already stated all-star outfielder Giancarlo Stanton is an untouchable.

Two other hurlers, Ryan Webb and Ricky Nolasco, are said to be available during trade talks.

DODGERS LOSE ELBERT FOR SEASON

Los Angeles Dodgers reliever Scott Elbert will undergo season-ending surgery.

The L.A. Times reported Thursday the left-handed hurler needs Tommy John surgery to repair a UCL tear in his elbow.

The 27-year-old, who has spent his entire MLB career with the Dodgers, is expected to be on the shelf for at least a year.

Elbert has had minor elbow surgery in the past.

In 120 games over five seasons with the Dodgers, Elbert has recorded a 3.61 ERA and 92 strikeouts.

MORELAND PLACED ON DL

For at least the next two weeks, Mitch Moreland of the Texas Rangers will be out of action.

Moreland, 25, was placed on the 15-day disabled list Thursday after an MRI revealed he has a Grade 1 hamstring strain. The first baseman was injured Wednesday night while trying to run out a double in a game against the Boston Red Sox.

Mooreland’s roster spot will be filled by Chris McGuiness, called up from the team’s triple-A affiliate, the Round Rock Express.

On Thursday, veteran Lance Berkman started at first for the Rangers.

BRIEFLY

The St. Louis Cardinals called up relief pitcher Kevin Siegrist Thursday. He replaced Maikel Cleto, a poor performer sent back to triple-A … San Diego Padres centre-fielder Cameron Maybin has been re-activated. He was on the disabled list for two months nursing a wrist injury.
