Move over Tim Thomas, another high-profile athlete has publicly disparaged U.S. President Barack Obama.

Philadelphia Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon turned questions concerning this week’s Boston Marathon blasts into political rhetoric when given the chance by CSN Philly.

During the interview, the five-time all-star, who pitched for seven seasons with the Boston Red Sox, was asked if he fears large crowds in the wake of recent violence.

After issuing a reasoned response, he turned his attention to the leader of the free world.

“The Phillies did a thing for us on Opening Day where we walked through the crowd,” Papelbon said. “I know when I was in Boston we came down through the bleachers for one opening game.

“I don’t feel comfortable doing that. I really, truly don’t. Today’s day and age has gotten so crazy – everything.”

So crazy, one might say, that the government is looking to put restrictions on high-powered weapons.

“Shoot, man,” Papelbon continued, “Obama wants to take our guns from us – everything.<

“You’ve got this (Boston Marathon) stuff going on. It’s a little bit insane for me, man. I really don’t even know how to take it.”

Last year, Thomas, formerly of the Boston Bruins, refused to attend a White House ceremony following the Bruins’ Stanley Cup win.

"I believe the Federal government has grown out of control, threatening the Rights, Liberties, and Property of the People," Thomas posted to Facebook.

"Because I believe this, today I exercised my right as a Free Citizen, and did not visit the White House. This was not about politics or party, as in my opinion both parties are responsible for the situation we are in as a country. This was about a choice I had to make as an INDIVIDUAL."
