It seemed preordained, that Giants run to glory.

San Francisco coasted to an NL West title, dusting the Reds and Cardinals with stunning series reversals, before sweeping Detroit in the Fall Classic.

In overcoming 2-0 and 3-1 playoff deficits, it was as though they were predestined to win a second World Series in three years.

It appears management believes it can happen again, that a surfeit of talent and fate resides with them still. While the Dodgers have thrown around money like confetti, the Giants spent the off-season without making significant changes.

There is no reason to suppose the Giants will regress, but a repeat of 2012 will be more difficult. In the East, the Nationals and Braves look stronger. The Reds’ pitching and offence isn’t likely to implode as it did in last year’s playoffs. Even within its own division, the Giants face an enhanced Dodgers team.
