Boston Red Sox lefthander Drake Britton was arrested on misdemeanor charges of reckless driving, driving under the influence and property damage, according to the Lee County Sheriff's office.

The 23-year-old, who was appearing in his first big-league spring training camp, was arrested in the early hours of Saturday morning in Estero, Fla.

The arrest report indicates that Britton was allegedly clocked doing 111 mph in a 45 mph zone, swerved between moving vehicles, crashed his pickup truck through a fence and continued on a dirt road for nearly a half kilometre.

When approached by a cop and asked for his driver's licence, Britton allegedly handed him a debit card.

"This is a matter that the Red Sox take very seriously, and it is being addressed," the Red Sox said in a statement released Tuesday.

"The club will not make further comment on this matter."

The report also indicated that the arresting officer smelled alcohol on Britton's breath, had slurred speech and watery eyes.

Britton also refused a breath test, but told the officer he had been drinking, according to a report obtained by ESPN.

He had been scheduled to pitch on Sunday but was scratched and sent back down to double-A Portland.

Britton finished last season with Portland, going 4-7 with a 3.71 earned-run average in 16 starts.
