Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine suffered another painful blow near the end of Boston's disastrous MLB season on Tuesday.

The New York Times reports the embattled manager fell off his bike trying to read a text message while cycling in New York City's Central Park.

"I shouldn't have been reading a text while I was riding," he told the newspaper. "That's the wrong thing to do. But at least I was wearing my helmet."

While riding on a wet path and reading a text message from second baseman Dustin Pedroia, Valentine had to swerve to avoid the umbrellas of two French tourists. The bike skidded and he fell into a ditch next to the Central Park Reservoir.

Valentine sustained minor injuries to his knees and hips, but did not miss Tuesday night's game against the New York Yankees.

The Red Sox sit in last place in the American League East Division, sporting a 69-92 record.
