Slugger Josh Hamilton has returned to Texas for tests on his blurred vision, the Rangers said Friday.

Hamilton, 31, hasn't played since coming out of the lineup after two at-bats Tuesday against the Los Angeles Angels.

"The last five or six days I've been battling something," Hamilton told MLB.com

"Every time I get sick it turns into a sinus infection, and that causes me to get off-kilter, off-balance. If your head's a little stopped up, you can get a little starry-eyed, dizzy."

Hamilton said he had his eyes checked and they were fine otherwise.

"It's 20/15," he said. "It used to be 20/10 but I'm getting older."

Entering play Friday night, Hamilton led the majors in homers with 42.

METS AND REGRETS

New York Mets manager Terry Collins apologized Friday for implying that his team had thrown in the towel on the season.

After the Mets were hammered 16-1 Thursday night by the Philadelphia Phillies, Collins was asked if he thought his team had quit.

"You have to ask them," Collins said, suggesting the questioner was correct.

The manager said Friday he regretted making the remark.

We know we're going through a tough time," he said. "I'm very proud of this team, the way they played all year. The one thing I will never, ever talk about is their effort. Their effort has always been there."

The Mets had lost 43 of their past 63 games entering play Friday night.
