MLB notes: Abreu loses to Victorino again
By QMI Agency
For the second time in his career, Bobby Abreu is hitting the road to make room for Shane Victorino.
The Los Angeles Dodgers designated veteran outfielder Abreu for assignment Wednesday to clear roster space for Victorino, who was acquired in a trade the day before from the Philadelphia Phillies.
The Dodgers have 10 days to trade or release Abreu, 38. He hit .251 with two homers and 17 RBI for them this season.
Victorino became the Phillies' regular right fielder on July 30, 2006 as Philadelphia traded Abreu to the New York Yankees.
Abreu broke into the majors in 1996 as a 22-year-old with the Houston Astros. He has a career .292 batting average through 17 seasons, with 286 homers and 1,347 RBI.
SORIANO STILL COULD GO
Alfonso Soriano still could get moved this season, Chicago Cubs general manager Theo Epstein told ESPN radio Wednesday.
The Cubs had tried to trade the 36-year-old outfielder before the non-waiver deadline Tuesday and almost had a deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
To deal a player after the July 31 deadline, he must clear waivers first. The Cubs don't think that would be a problem in this case because of Soriano's contract -- he still has $44 million remaining on his deal.
REDS CATCHER BANNED FOR THREE
Cincinnati Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco was suspended Wednesday for three games for making contact with an umpire.
Mesoraco put a hand on umpire Chad Fairchild during a confrontation over a pitch call in the third inning Monday.
Mesoraco is appealing the suspension. He also was fined an undisclosed amount.
The 24-year-old is batting .221 with five homers and 14 RBI in 46 games this season.
Boston Red Sox Josh Beckett has a sore back but it's not likely severe enough to put him on the disabled list, manager Bobby Valentine said Wednesday. A back spasm forced Beckett out of the game Tuesday night in the third inning ... The Atlanta Braves placed pitcher Jair Jurrjens on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with a groin strain. The move cleared space for left-hander Paul Maholm, who was acquired in a trade. Jurrjens has struggled this season, going 3-4 with a 6.89 earned-run average in 11 games ... The Tampa Rays have released designated hitter Hideki Matsui. The 38-year-old hit .147 in 34 games. The have recalled right-handed pitcher Josh Lueke and optioned infielder Brooks Conrad to triple-A Durham. Lueke was 1-3 with a 4.73 ERA for the Bulls ... The Phillies have designated Mike Fontenot for assignment. The 32-year-old infielder hit .289 this season with one homer and five RBI.
