Former slugger Jose Canseco has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection, listing $20,850 in assets against $1.686 million in liabilities, the Las Vegas Sun has reported.

Among the liabilities is $506,000 owed to the U.S. internal revenue service.

During his major-league career, from 1985 through 2001, he made a total of $52.995 million in salary.

Canseco, who has admitted he used steroids, ranks 34th on the career home run list with 462.

The 48-year-old now lives in Las Vegas.
