SEATTLE - The New York Yankees placed third baseman Alex Rodriguez on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with a fractured left hand.

Rodriguez suffered the injury during the eighth inning of Tuesday's 4-2 loss to the Seattle Mariners after he was hit by a pitch from Felix Hernandez. Rodriguez was the third and final hit batsman by Hernandez in a span of five batters.

The 36-year-old Rodriguez is hitting .276 with 15 homers and 44 RBI in 94 games this season.

New York recalled infielder Ramiro Pena from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to fill the roster spot. Pena has a .100 average with one home run and four runs batted in through 23 games for the Yankees this season.

Rodriguez's injury is just the latest for the Yankees this season.

Starter Michael Pineda, acquired from Seattle in the offseason, didn't even make it out of spring training because of a shoulder injury, while future Hall of Fame closer Mariano Rivera suffered a season-ending knee injury in May.

Andy Pettitte's comeback season was halted in late June with a fractured ankle and recently it was learned that outfielder Brett Gardner, sidelined since April with an elbow injury, will probably miss the rest of the season because of surgery.

There have also been short disabled list stints for ace starter CC Sabathia and relief pitcher David Robertson.
