The Milwaukee Brewers quietly have offered pitcher Zach Greinke a five-year deal worth for close to $112.5 million, CBSSports.com reported Friday.
The offer, made a week or so ago, was on a par with a contract extension Matt Cain got from the San Francisco Giants in the spring. Cain was guaranteed $112.5 million over five years.
Nonetheless, Greinke, a 28-year-old right-hander, is expected to test the free-agent market during the off-season.
He has a 9-3 record with a 3.57 earned-run average this season.
TOUGH PILL TO SWALLOW
The Miami Marlins' Hanley Ramirez has been sent to hospital with an infected right hand a few days after punching an electric fan during a temper tantrum, the Palm Beach Post reported Friday.
Manager Ozzie Guillen said Ramirez did not take his prescribed medication after being stitched up last Sunday. The third baseman had cut himself swinging at the fan in the clubhouse after grounding out in the sixth inning.
"Hopefully the doctor will find exactly what he needs and make sure baby Hanley takes (it)," Guillen said. I will (tell him) every night 'open your mouth' and put it in his mouth.
"How do you forget to take a pill that the doctors (tells you) to take?"
Ramirez is expected to miss a few games.
STRUGGLING PITCHERS DEALT
A couple of pitchers having bad seasons changed teams Friday.
The Kansas City Royals traded left-hander Jonathan Sanchez to the Colorado Rockies for righty Jeremy Guthrie.
Sanchez, who threw a no-hitter for the Giants in 2009, had a 1-6 record with a 7.76 ERA in 12 starts this season. The Royals traded outfielder Melky Cabrera to San Francisco in the off-season to get the 29-year-old.
Guthrie, 33, was Colorado's opening-day starter. He has a 3-9 record with a 6.35 ERA in 19 games this season, including 15 starts.
The Rockies traded pitchers Jason Hammel and Matt Lindstrom to the Orioles for Guthrie in February.
The New York Mets have traded infielder Omar Quintanilla to the Baltimore Orioles for cash. Quintanilla, 30, hit .257 with one home run and four RBI in 29 games with the Mets this season ... Oakland Athletics shortstop Cliff Pennington went on the 15-day disabled list Friday because of left elbow tendinitis. Pennington is batting .197 with three homers and 16 RBI in 82 games this season. The A's recalled infielder Eric Sogard from triple-A Sacramento ... Infielder Geoff Blum announced Friday on Twitter that he was being cut by the Arizona Diamondbacks. Blum, 39, hit .143 in 17 games with Arizona this year. He has played for six teams, including the Montreal Expos, in 14 major-league seasons.
