The Los Angeles Dodgers are angling to get either Ryan Dempster or Matt Garza from the Chicago Cubs, sources told CBS Sports.

The Dodgers are seen as favourites to acquire Dempster, who has pitched 27 consecutive runless innings -- a streak that was interrupted by a stay on the disabled list because of a strained latissimus dorsi.

The Dodgers also have talked to the Cubs about Garza, like Dempster a right-handed starter.

GEE NEEDS SURGERY

Pitcher Dillon Gee will have surgery Friday to prevent a recurrence of a blood clot in his right shoulder, a source told ESPNNewYork.com on Wednesday.

Gee, who ended up in a New York hospital this week after feeling numbness in his fingers, was given an option of remaining on blood thinners but surgery -- possibly season-ending -- was deemed the best course of action because he has a damaged artery.

Doctors were able to break up a blood clot in Gee's pitching shoulder with a surgical procedure involving a catheter, has been placed on the disabled list. The recovery time is expected to be six to eight weeks.

ANOTHER TRY FOR CRAWFORD

First, Carl Crawford needed off-season surgery on his left wrist. As he was recovering, the Boston Red Sox outfielder sprained a ligament in his left elbow, which eventually might require Tommy John surgery. Then in early July, a rehab assignment was cut short by a groin strain.

Crawford will try again Thursday when he starts a 20-day minor-league assignment at triple-A Pawtucket.

The outfielder, who turns 31 on Aug. 5, is a career .293 hitter but batted just .255 last season with the Red Sox.

A'S RELEASE RELIEVER

The Oakland Athletics released pitcher Brian Fuentes on Wednesday.

The 12-year veteran was 2-2 with five saves, three blown saves, and a 6.84 earned-run average in 26 relief appearances with the A's this season. In 644 career appearances with five teams, Fuentes has 204 saves and a 3.58 ERA.

The 36-year-old left-hander was designated for assignment on July 3.

BRIEFLY

TV ratings for the all-star game Tuesday were up 3% over last year to a mark of 8.1, MLB said in a statement Wednesday. The largest market shares were in St. Louis, Detroit, Cincinnati and Dallas ... Pitcher Justin Verlander took the loss for the American League with a shaky first-inning outing. On the bright side, reports say he is dating Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Kate Upton.
