Roy Oswalt will make his debut Friday for the Texas Rangers.
The 34-year-old right-hander, who signed May 29 with Texas, went 1-1 with a 5.87 earned-run average in four minor-league starts.
When he takes on the Colorado Rockies on Friday it will be his first major-league appearance since Sept. 27, 2011.
He had a 9-10 record with a 3.69 ERA in 23 starts last season for the Philadelphia Phillies and twice spent time on the disabled list because of a lower-back inflammation.
Oswalt has a 159-93 career record with a 3.21 ERA in 339 games with the Houston Astros and Phillies.
SURGERY FOR TULOWITZKI
Colorado Rockies star Troy Tulowitzki will undergo surgery Thursday in Philadelphia on his left groin and it is not known when he will return.
The Rockies said on Twitter that Tulowitzki was "diagnosed with hockey/baseball pitcher syndrome ... a type of athletic pubalgia or core injury to his left groin region."
Some people are calling it a sports hernia.
Tulowitzki was hitting .287 with eight homers and 27 RBI when he went on to the disabled list May 31.
The 27-year-old shortstop seemed to be recovering and went on a minor-league rehab assignment last week but then tweaked the injury during a triple-A game.
SORE WRIST SIDELINES CLOSER
Detroit Tigers closer Jose Valverde has a sprained right wrist and is expected to be sidelined for three to four days.
Valverde, who was examined by a hand specialist Wednesday, felt pain in the wrist as he warmed up in the bullpen Tuesday night.
Tigers trainer Kevin Rand said he didn't expect it to be a long-term injury and said the reliever would resume throwing when he no longer felt pain. Rand said an MRI showed irritation of the flexor tendon.
With Valverde ailing, Phil Coke loosened up quickly Tuesday night and earned the save by pitching the ninth inning as the Tigers defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 6-3.
Valverde has struggled with his control this season but has managed 13 saves in 16 chances with a 4.18 earned-run average.
