The relief pitcher formerly known as Leo Nunez was handed an eight-week suspension Monday by MLB for age and identity fraud.

Juan Carlos Oviedo -- who has reverted to his real name -- will be eligible to return to the majors July 23.

The 30-year-old Dominican -- one year older than previously listed -- reported Monday to the Marlins complex after spending eight months in the Dominican Republic resolving legal issues relating to his identity.

Oviedo was given a visa last Friday to return to the U.S. and had a physical Monday. He is eligible to participate in extended spring training during his suspension.

Oviedo had 92 saves with the Marlins the past three seasons,

MANNY A MAYBE

There is a chance Manny Ramirez will be back in the majors Wednesday after serving a 50-game suspension for a failed drug test.

The Oakland Athletics aren't certain, however, that Ramirez is ready to play for them.

A's manager Bob Melvin said Tuesday there wass a "50-50" chance Ramirez would be activated Wednesday -- the former slugger's 40th birthday.

Ramirez is 6-for-28 with no extra-base hits in eight games for triple-A Sacramento.

Melvin said he'd like to see Ramirez swinging the bat better before adding him to the A's roster, but he also noted that the team needs some offensive punch.

"If guys were swinging the bats consistently across the board, you'd like to see him get some more at-bats, drive some balls," Melvin told the San Jose Mercury-News. "But where we are right now, he could be an option for Wednesday."

The A's play an afternoon game on the road against the Twins Wednesday, then have a day off Thursday before opening a three-game series Friday in Kansas City.

DOC TO SEE A DOC

Roy Halladay, who has struggled during his past eight starts, will have his sore right shoulder examined by a doctor Tuesday.

The Philadelphia Phillies right-hander left after two innings Sunday having given up four runs on four hits and one walk. He has a 1-5 record with a 5.08 earned-run average through his past eight appearances.

Overall, the 35-year-old is 4-5 with a 3.98 ERA in 11 starts.

Pitching coach Rich Dubee admitted that the shoulder problem has been a lingering issue.

LEFTY HITTER FOR PADRES?

Phil Mickelson is involved in an ownership group that wants to buy the Padres, the golfer has told the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Mickelson has joined a group headed by former Los Angeles Dodgers owner Peter O'Malley.

"This was a unique opportunity with families that had done this before and know how to do it right and want to get involved in the community," Mickelson said.

O'Malley said his sons, Kevin and Brian, and his nephews, Peter and Tom Seidler, would run the team.
