New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter moved into sole possession of 14th place on baseball’s all-time hits list on Sunday by getting his 3,155th hit, surpassing George Brett.
Jeter led off the first inning with a line drive to left field off A’s starter Tommy Milone. Seth Smith made a diving attempt to catch it, but he couldn’t control it and it fell for a single.
“I’m always kind of bummed out when guys pass you, because you had your own place in the record book for a while, and I had that one there for a while,” Brett said in a statement. “But a guy like Derek comes around and passes you, really, I think it all depends on the type of person that did it. I have the utmost respect for him.”
