Orioles to announce Jones extension By Sports Network

The Baltimore Orioles have scheduled a press conference for 11:30 a.m. (EST) Sunday, when they're expected to announce a contract extension for center fielder Adam Jones.

The deal will reportedly make him the richest player in club history. According to the Baltimore Sun, the contract is expected to be worth $85.5 million over six years. That will keep him in an Orioles uniform through the 2018 season. The newspaper reports the contract has performance incentives that could drive the total amount to $91.5 million.

The pact would break the old mark of $72 million for six years given to shortstop Miguel Tejada prior to the 2004 campaign, and will also shatter the deal given to teammate Nick Markakis in 2009 -- $66.1 million over six years.

Jones and the O's had agreed to terms on a one-year contract back in mid- February in order to avoid arbitration.

Jones was coming off his best season as a pro, setting career-highs in games (151), doubles (26), home runs (25) and runs batted in (83) while hitting .280 last year.

Over 47 games this season, he is batting .309 with 14 homers, nine doubles and 31 RBI as the Orioles have taken first place in the AL East.

Through 671 career games with Seattle and Baltimore, the seven-year veteran is a career .278 hitter.
