Outfielder Jason Bay was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a broken left rib caused by an attempted diving catch, the New York Mets said Tuesday.

The B.C. native was hitting .240 with three home runs and five RBI in 15 games this season.

"Originally it felt like I jarred my shoulder a little bit," Bay, 33, said of the play Monday in the second game of a doubleheader against the San Francisco Giants.

Mets right-hander Mike Pelfrey also went on the disabled list because of a swelling in his pitching elbow.

The Mets recalled third baseman Zach Lutz, 25, from triple-A Buffalo, and left-handed pitcher Robert Carson from double-A Binghamton.

FORMER ALL-STAR DEMOTED

Pitcher Jair Jurrjens, an all-star last season when he led the Atlanta Braves with 13 wins, was optioned Tuesday to triple-A Gwinnett.

Jurrjens, 26, is 0-2 with a 9.37 earned-run average in four starts this year.

On Monday against the Los Angeles Dodgers, he retired only seven of the 17 batters he faced.

The Braves recalled right-hander Cory Gearrin from Gwinnett.

CLEMENS 'AGAINST' STEROIDS

Roger Clemens is opposed to steroids and became a star pitcher through hard work, his lawyer told jurors Tuesday.

Use of steroids and human growth hormone "was total anathema, totally against everything he stood for," attorney Rusty Hardin said of Clemens, who is charged with lying to Congress in testimony over performance-enhancing drugs.

Hardin said trainer Brian McNamee, who is expected to testify that Clemens used PEDs, is a liar.

The prosecution is charging that Clemens covered up his steroid use.
