Pirates right-hnder A.J. Burnett fouled a bunt into his right eye Wednesday in Bradenton, Fla., and was scheduled to return to Pittsburgh for further examination.

Pirates pitchers were taking part in a bunting tournament when Burnett redirected a toss from a pitching machine. The ball went under the brim of Burnett's helmet and smacked him in the eye, drawing blood, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.

The 35-year-old pitcher was obtained from the New York Yankees in a trade two weeks ago.
