David Ortiz and the Boston Red Sox are likely headed to arbitration to determine the designated hitter's 2012 salary.

Ortiz has asked for $16.5 million, while the Red Sox have offered $12.65 million, a slight increase over the $12.5 million he earned in 2011.

A hearing hasn't been scheduled for this week, leaving time to negotiate, ESPN.com reported Wednesday. If a hearing is needed, it will be the first for Boston since Tim Wakefield in 2002.

NATS, LANNAN TAKE SIDES

The Washington Nationals and John Lannan have kicked off the arbitration season, as the sides have argued the first case of the year.

Lannan asked for $5.7 million -- a raise from $2.75 million -- during the hearing, while the Nationals argued he should earn $5 million.

A three-person panel of Robert Herzog, Elizabeth Neumeier and John Skonier is expected to issue a ruling Thursday.

Lannan went 10-13 with a 3.70 earned-run average in 33 starts last season.

GUILLEN HEADS WEST

The Seattle Mariners signed infielder Carlos Guillen to a minor-league contract Wednesday with an invitation to spring training.

The 14-year veteran spent the first six seasons of his career with the Mariners before being traded to Detroit, where he has played since.

Last season, Guillen battled injuries while hitting .232 with three home runs and 13 RBI.

The 36-year-old is a three-time all-star. He is a career .285 hitter with 124 homers and 660 RBI through 1,305 games with Seattle and Detroit.
