MLB notes: Twins hope Zumaya can turn up heat again
By QMI Agency
Promising but oft-injured reliever Joel Zumaya has agreed to a one-year contract with the Minnesota Twins, according to numerous reports Monday.
The 27-year-old was capable of hitting 100 m.p.h. as a rookie with the Detroit Tigers in 2006, but he has had a string of arm trouble since then and hasn't pitched since breaking his right elbow during a game June 28, 2010. He has had elbow surgery twice since then.
Zumaya will get an $850,000 salary with potential bonuses of another $900,000.
Zumaya struck out 97 batters and had an earned-run average of 1.94 in 62 games in 2006 but has not appeared in more than 31 games during a season since.
A's DEAL FOR OUTFIELDER
The Colorado Rockies have traded outfielder Seth Smith to the Oakland Athletics for starting pitchers Guillermo Moscoso and Josh Outman.
Smith, 29, hit .284 with 15 home runs and 59 RBI while stealing 10 bases last season for Colorado. In parts of five seasons with the Rockies, Smith posted a .275 average with 51 homers and 181 RBI.
The trade came a day after Smith reached a one-year, $2.4-million agreement with the Rockies. But Smith was expendable because the Rockies had signed free-agent outfielder Michael Cuddyer earlier.
Moscoso, a 28-year-old rookie with Oakland last season, was 8-10 with a 3.38 earned-run average -- second among American League rookies.
Outman, 27, returned last season following Tommy John surgery in June 2009. In 13 games, Outman was 3-5 with a 3.70 ERA.
The Detroit Tigers agreed to one-year contracts with pitchers Rick Porcello and Phil Coke. Porcello, 23, was 14-9 with a 4.75 ERA last season in 31 starts. Coke, 29, was 3-9 with a 4.47 ERA in 48 games (14 starts) ... The Pittsburgh Pirates agreed to a one-year, $4.1-million contract with reliever Joel Hanrahan. The 30-year-old was 1-4 with a 1.83 ERA in 70 appearances last season. The Pirates also signed starting pitcher Charlie Morton, 28, to a one-year-deal ... The New York Yankees signed pitcher Phil Hughes to a one-year contract. The 25-year-old was 5-5 with a 5.79 ERA in an injury-plagued 2011 ... The Los Angeles Angels agreed to a one-year deal with Alberto Callaspo. Callaspo, 28, hit .288 with six home runs and 46 RBI in 2011, playing mostly third base ... The Milwaukee Brewers signed Nyjer Morgan to a one-year, $2.35-million contract. The centre fielder hit .304 with four homers and 37 RBI in 2011 ... The Kansas City Royals signed catcher Brayan Pena to a one-year contract.
