Boston Red Sox pitcher John Lackey will have Tommy John surgery, sidelining him until the 2013 season, new general manager Ben Cherington announced Tuesday.

Lackey had elbow soreness intermittently during the season, Cherington said.

"John Lackey pitched through circumstances that I don't think anybody in this room fully understood," he said. "He got beat up for it. He was dealing with stuff on and off the field that were really difficult. He showed tremendous toughness."

The right-handed starter had a 12-12 record in 2011 with a 6.41 earned-run average.
