Theo Epstein has reached an agreement to join the Chicago Cubs front office, numerous reports say.

Epstein's contract as Red Sox general manager runs through 2012, but WEEI radio in Boston said Wednesday he had reached a five-year deal worth $15 million with the Cubs. ESPN said the deal was worth closer to $20 million. Yet to be decided is what title Epstein will be given.

Epstein has had a remarkable run as Red Sox GM. He was hired in 2002 at the age of 28 and assembled the 2004 team that ended an 86-year World Series drought in Boston. The Red Sox won another World Series three years later.

This past season the Red Sox fell apart down the stretch, squandering a nine-game lead in the AL wild-card race and missing the playoffs.
