The Cleveland Indians' crowded infirmary added two more patients Friday.
Outfielder Michael Brantley and pitcher Josh Tomlin were both put on the 15-day disabled list, joining pitcher Carlos Carrasco, outfielders Grady Sizemore and Trevor Crowe, second baseman Jason Kipnis and designated hitter Travis Hafner on the DL.
Brantley, who has missed eight games this month, has a sore wrist while Tomlin has right elbow soreness. The starting pitcher left Wednesday's game after 4 2/3 innings, allowing six runs on 11 hits.
Jim Thome, acquired from the Minnesota Twins on Thursday, and reliever Nick Hagadone, called up from the minors, will take the two roster spots.
COACH'S WIFE RECOVERING
The wife of St. Louis Cardinals coach Dave Duncan is recovering after having surgery to remove a brain tumour.
Jeanine Duncan had the surgery on Sunday but the Cardinals waited until Friday to issue a press release on behalf of the couple. Dave Duncan has taken a leave of absence from the Cards to be with his wife.
"Dave and Jeanine are currently in the process of putting together a treatment and rehabilitation program and have received consultation from some of the leading medical specialists in the country," the Cardinals' release said. "Dave, on behalf of Jeanine and the entire Duncan family, wanted to thank everyone for the many well-wishes and the show of support that they have received during this difficult time."
Duncan has been the Cardinals pitching coach since 1996.
