San Francisco, CA - The Giants and Phillies emptied their benches Friday night after San Francisco reliever Ramon Ramirez hit Shane Victorino with a pitch in the top of the sixth inning.

Victorino stepped toward the mound and Ramirez tossed his glove down, sparking a melee that didn't appear to include any punches.

Giants catcher Eli Whiteside, who rushed out in between Victorino and Ramirez, turned and wrapped up Placido Polanco by the legs as he rushed in from first base.

The teams, including both bullpens, gathered in front of the mound in a scrum while Victorino was being held back by home plate umpire Mike Muchlinski.

Victorino eventually pushed his way past the ump and into the middle of the mess. He was ejected along with Whiteside and Ramirez, whose pitch appeared to be aimed directly at Victorino's back.

The teams also emptied their benches in Game 6 of last year's National League Championship Series after Giants starter Jonathan Sanchez plunked Chase Utley in the back with a pitch and Utley picked up the ball near the first base line and tossed it back towards the mound.

Sanchez started Friday night's game for the Giants.
