Injured New York Mets pitcher Johan Santana threw a 15-minute bullpen session Sunday in Miami and could begin a minor-league rehab stint this week.

Santana, who has missed the entire season while recovering from shoulder surgery, threw 45 pitches prior to the Mets game against the Florida Marlins.

"I felt good overall," Santana told MLB.com. "I think all the work that we have been doing is paying off. I think the way I'm feeling right now is, I'm getting closer."

Depending on how the former Cy Young winner feels Monday, he could head to the minors to start his rehab assignment on Wednesday.

LESTER OFF DL

Boston Red Sox lefty Jon Lester will be activated off the disabled list in time to start Monday night against the Kansas City Royals.

Lester was eligible to come off the DL Friday but the Red Sox have the 27-year-old starter a couple extra days to heal from a strained lower lat muscle. He went on the 15-day DL soon after leaving his last start, against the Blue Jays, early due to the injury.

The Red Sox will likely limit Lester to 80-90 pitches in his start against Kansas City.

BELTRAN SAYS NO TO AL

Mets outfielder Carlos Beltran likely wouldn't accept a trade to an American League team, according to a report on ESPN.com.

Beltran, who is expected to be dealt before July 31 despite having a full no-trade clause in his contract, wants to stay in the National League so there's no chance he'll be asked to DH instead of playing right field.

"Right now, I feel so comfortable with the National League," Beltran said in the report. "I've been here seven years. I feel comfortable here ... It's just seven years that I haven't played in the American League.

"But let's see. I mean, it's going to be convenient for the organization, for sure, but it also has to be convenient for me. If it's convenient for both, we move forward."

REHAB FOR ROY

Philadelphia Phillies right-handr Roy Oswalt will make his first minor-league rehab start on Wednesday, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Oswalt, on the DL since the end of June with a bulging disc in his back, has been cleared to pitch for triple-A Lehigh Valley. The 33-year-old pitched a bullpen session Friday and later told reporters he likely only needs one minor-league start before re-joining the Phillies.

In 13 starts this season, Oswalt has gone 4-6 with a 3.79 earned-run average.
