Report: Reds' Leake arrested for theft
By Sports Network

Cincinnati, OH - Reds starter Mike Leake was arrested Monday and charged with misdemeanor theft at a Macy's store in downtown Cincinnati.

The Cincinnati Enquirer reported that employees said Leake took nearly $60 in property from the store. He was captured on security cameras at the department store and booked into the jail in the afternoon, the paper reported.

Leake's theft charge carries a maximum jail term of 180 days.

The Reds said in a statement that they were "advised to not publicly address this matter because of the pending legal proceedings."

"However, we do not condone behavior of the type alleged, which is wholly inconsistent with the principles of this organization and our community and is detrimental to the positive direction we seek to follow," the team said. "When the legal process has been completed, we will handle this matter internally."

Leake, 23, is 2-0 with a 5.40 ERA in three starts this season. He went 8-4 as a rookie last year, starting in 22 of his 24 appearances.

The team also released a statement on Leake's behalf, saying he has been advised by his attorney not to make further statements on the situation.

"This case will proceed in the justice system, where Mike's story will be told. Until that time, there will be nothing further from Mike on this episode until the court proceedings have concluded," the statement said.

It said Leake apologized to family, friends, the organization and the team "for this distraction."
