Bonds trial begins, jury selected By Sports Network

San Francisco, CA - The trial of Barry Bonds began Monday with jury selection.

The New York Times reports that eight women and four men were selected to be jurors for Bonds' perjury trial, which had been scheduled to start more than two years ago.

But an appeal over evidence and subsequent motions set the start date back, and Bonds, baseball's all-time home run leader, now faces four charges of lying under oath and one count of obstructing justice. He pleaded not guilty to the charges, which he faces as a result of his 2003 grand jury testimony in the BALCO case.

The Times reported that group of about 100 potential jurors filled out questionnaires about the case, and 55 were asked to show up at the courthouse Monday. The story said the 12 jurors and two alternates were selected after questioning by lawyers and U.S. district judge Susan Illston.

Bonds' trial is expected to last between three and four weeks, according to various reports.
