OAKLAND -- The Oakland Athletics made it official by agreeing to a one-year contract with designated hitter and outfielder Hideki Matsui.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

Matsui hit .274 with 21 homers and 84 RBI in 145 games with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 2010, serving primarily as a DH.

That followed a successful seven-year run with the New York Yankees, which saw the native of Japan finish second in American League Rookie of the Year voting in 2003 by hitting .287 with 16 homers and 106 RBI in 163 games.

Matsui closed his Yankees career by earning World Series MVP honours in 2009 after batting a torrid .615 (8-for-13) with a double, three homers and eight RBI in a six-game triumph over Philadelphia.

Over his eight-year major-league career, Matsui is a .290 hitter with a .369 on-base percentage, 161 homers, 220 doubles and 681 RBI in 1,061 games.
