ST. LOUIS -- The St. Louis Cardinals have shipped infielder Brendan Ryan to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for minor league pitcher Maikel Cleto.

Cleto spent the 2010 season in High Desert, Seattle's advanced-A minor league affiliate. The 21-year-old righty posted a 4-9 record with a 6.16 earned run average in 23 appearances -- 21 starts -- while striking out 83 in 102 1/3 innings.

"Cleto has a power arm that at times has reached 100 (m.p.h.)," Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said of the 6-foot-3, 235-pound native of the Dominican Republic. "He's someone that could project as a back of the bullpen talent with additional development and experience."

Ryan, 28, has spent the last four seasons in St. Louis, playing mostly at shortstop while also seeing time at second and third base. He is a career .259 hitter, though he batted just .223 in 139 games last season.

In 415 career games, Ryan has scored 165 runs, stolen 39 bases and compiled a .314 on-base percentage.
