KANSAS CITY -- The Kansas City Royals have agreed to a one-year contract with outfielder Melky Cabrera.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, although Cabrera must first pass a physical.

Cabrera spent the 2010 season with the Atlanta Braves after beginning his big league career with the New York Yankees. He hit .255 in 147 games last season with 27 doubles, four homers and 42 runs batted in.

The 26-year-old Dominican native signed with the Yankees as an undrafted free agent in 2001 and remained with the organization until New York dealt him to Atlanta as part of the package that sent Javier Vazquez to the Bronx last December.

Cabrera is a career. 267 hitter in 716 games with 40 home runs and 270 runs batted in. He can play all three outfield positions and was part of New York's 2009 World Series championship team.
