LAKE BUENA VISTA, FLA. — The St. Louis Cardinals avoided salary arbitration with Ryan Theriot, signing the recently acquired infielder to a one-year deal.
Fanhouse.com reported the deal is worth $3.3 million.
St. Louis picked up Theriot from the Los Angeles Dodgers for reliever Blake Hawksworth on November 30.
Theriot, who turned 31 on Tuesday, spent the final two months of last season with the Dodgers after 5 1/2 years with the Cubs. In 150 games last season, he hit .270 with 20 stolen bases.
Theriot's best season came in 2008, when he batted .307 with a .387 on-base percentage in 149 games for the Cubs. He is currently eligible for arbitration.
