BOSTON -- The Detroit Tigers have reportedly signed catcher Victor Martinez to a lucrative multi-year contract.

Martinez was a free-agent after spending all of last season and part of the previous season with the Boston Red Sox.

The Boston Globe, citing an MLB source, confirmed an earlier report out of Venezuela that said the deal was for four years and $50 million. The Globe reported that the Red Sox would not offer Martinez four years.

The Tigers had no immediate comment on the reports.

Martinez, 31, played in 127 games for Boston last season, hitting 20 homers and knocking in 79 runs with an .844 OPS.

The switch-hitting Venezuelan played his first eight-plus seasons with the Cleveland Indians before the Red Sox acquired him at the trade deadline in 2009.

The busy Tigers inked reliever Joaquin Benoit to a three-year contract last Friday and have also re-signed shortstop Jhonny Peralta and third baseman Brandon Inge this offseason.
