What a bonus from Honus for an order of nuns in Baltimore.

A rare Honus Wagner baseball card that had been bequeathed to the School Sisters of Notre Dame in Baltimore has sold at auction for $262,900, the Washington Post reports.

The nuns got $220,000 from the sale, after subtracting 19.5 per cent in charges.

Sister Virginia Muller said the money will be used to support the order’s global ministries.

Only about 60 of the Honus Wagner cards, from the T206 set produced between 1909 and 1911, are known to exist. Doug Walton, a collector and card-shop owner, purchased the card.

The card was issued by the American Tobacco Company. Wagner, the son of German immigrants, demanded that production of his baseball card be stopped, apparently because he did not want children to buy cigarettes to get the souvenir.

Barnett back in bigs

The Houston Astros have appointed Mike Barnett as their hitting coach, replacing Jeff Bagwell who stepped down in October. Barnett had been the Toronto Blue Jays batting coach from 2002 to 2005.

He spent the past two seasons as Houston’s minor league hitting co-ordinator.

Mets official linked to gambling

New York Mets clubhouse manager Charlie Samuels was caught on wiretaps placing bets through a sports gambling ring, law enforcement sources told the Daily News.

Samuels, who has worked with the team for 27 years, was suspended by the club last week. Samuels is believed to have confessed to Major League Baseball authorities that he bet on baseball games, sources told the Daily News.

Organized crime associates allegedly also were caught on wiretaps touting the value of baseball information that Samuels was providing to them.
