DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers have declined the option on the contract of shortstop Jhonny Peralta for the 2011 season.

Peralta joined the Tigers on July 28 in a trade with Cleveland and hit .253 with eight homers and 38 runs batted in over 57 games with Detroit. In a combined 148 games with the Tigers and Indians last season, Peralta hit .249 with 15 homers and 81 RBI.

The Tigers hope to re-sign Peralta as a free agent.

"We remain optimistic that a deal can be worked out between Jhonny and the club," said Tigers president/CEO/GM Dave Dombrowski in a statement.

Peralta had spent his entire big league career with Cleveland before July's trade. In 980 games since 2003, Peralta is a career .263 hitter with 111 home runs and 494 runs batted in.
