SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Padres announced first baseman Adrian Gonzalez will have right shoulder surgery in the near future.

Gonzalez will go under the knife to repair his right labrum but is expected to be ready by the start of spring training next year.

The three-time All Star injured the shoulder in May but still played in 160 games for the Padres, hitting .298 with 31 home runs and 101 RBI. His on-base percentage was .393, the second highest of his career.

The first overall pick in the 2000 draft has spent the last five seasons in San Diego after a two-year stint in Texas. The 28-year-old is a career .284 hitter with 168 homers and 525 RBI in 858 games.
