PHILADELPHIA -- Atlanta Braves starter Jair Jurrjens was scratched from Monday's start and right-hander Brandon Beachy will make his major league debut against Philadelphia.
Jurrjens developed soreness in his right knee during a bullpen session on Friday and Atlanta was concerned enough to hold him out of the opener of a crucial three-game series with first-place Philadelphia.
The Braves come into the series three games back in the standings with 12 to play. Another three-game set against the Phillies will close out the regular season in Atlanta.
Beachy was named the Braves' Double-A pitcher of the year for 2010. He appeared in 27 games there, starting six, and compiled a 3-1 record while pitching to a 1.47 earned run average. In 73 2/3 innings, he struck out 100 batters and walked 22.
The 24-year-old was then promoted to Triple-A Gwinnett and went 2-0 in seven starts (eight games) with 48 strikeouts and six walks.
A corresponding move to the 40-man roster wasn't immediately announced.
