BOSTON - The Boston Red Sox have activated veteran catcher Jason Varitek from the 15-day disabled list.
Varitek had been on the DL since July 1 with a right foot fracture. He was hitting .263 with seven home runs and 16 RBI in 34 games this season prior to the injury, which occurred on June 30 when he took a foul ball from Tampa Bay’s Carl Crawford off the foot.
The Red Sox also selected the contract of first baseman Lars Anderson and recalled outfielder Josh Reddick from Triple-A Pawtucket.
Anderson, 22, was inserted into Monday’s starting lineup and will be making his major league debut against the Rays.
The left-handed swinging Anderson batted .274 with 15 home runs and 69 RBI in 130 games between Double-A Portland and Pawtucket.
Reddick has appeared in 11 games for Boston in 2010, going 4-for-25 (.160) with two RBI.
