Bronx, NY - Mark Teixeira hit his 30th home run of the season -- a three-run shot -- as the Yankees lit up Oakland pitching for three home runs for the second straight game in a 9-3 victory that netted New York sole possession of first place in the AL East.

Nick Swisher hit a two-run homer and Curtis Granderson a solo shot for New York, which won its fourth straight game and took over top billing in the division by one game coupled with Tampa Bay's loss to Toronto on Tuesday.

Phil Hughes (16-6) needed to go only five innings for the win but matched a season-high with five walks on the way to being charged with two runs and four hits.

Oakland's Vin Mazzaro (6-7) was tagged for all nine runs, seven of those earned, in just 3 2/3 innings to remain winless in seven consecutive starts.

The outing followed an 11-5 loss in the opener to this four-game set in which Trevor Cahill gave up a season-high eight runs over four innings. The Athletics dropped to 4-4 on a 10-game road trip.

The hosts got to Mazzaro right away with a three-run first. Brett Gardner sparked the offense with a base hit and stole second before Derek Jeter walked and pulled off a double-steal with Gardner to put both in scoring position.

Robinson Cano hit into a run-scoring double play and an error on Mark Ellis at second allowed Jeter to score. It was 3-0 after Jorge Posada tripled in Swisher.

The A's threatened to get right back into it in the third, but only managed a Kurt Suzuki sacrifice fly after loading the bases with nobody out.

Swisher drilled a two-run shot out to right in the bottom half to stretch the lead to 5-1.

Rajai Davis got one back for Oakland with an RBI groundout in the fourth, but the Yankees struck for four runs in their at-bat in the fourth frame on home runs from Granderson and Teixeira.

Daric Barton's solo homer in the seventh accounted for the only run given up by Chad Gaudin over three crisp innings in relief of Hughes.
