NEW YORK -- Major League Baseball handed down a two-game suspension to Indians third base coach Steve Smith for his inappropriate and aggressive actions during a bench-clearing incident during Tuesday's game against the Red Sox.

Smith got into a heated exchange with several Boston players after Cleveland's Jensen Lewis threw a pitch behind Sox third baseman Adrian Beltre. It was the fourth time in the contest a player had been either hit or thrown behind.

Josh Beckett was responsible for plunking Shelley Duncan and Shin-Soo Choo earlier in the game and was the first one out of Boston's dugout following the pitch to Beltre, jawing at several Indians players as cooler heads prevailed.

Though no serious contact was made between players, Lewis was ejected by home plate umpire Tim Welke, while Beckett and Smith were later given the heave.

Smith, Lewis and Beckett were each fined an undisclosed amount by the league, as were Boston's Mike Cameron, Jacoby Ellsbury, Dustin Pedroia and Kevin Youkilis, who each made their way on the field but were on the club's disabled list.
