Washington - Philadelphia Phillies All-Star first baseman Ryan Howard left Sunday's 6-4 11-inning win over the Washington Nationals in the first inning with a sprained left ankle.

Howard was hit by a pitch on the right elbow after Jayson Werth doubled with two outs. After Ben Francisco followed with a run-scoring single, Howard appeared to turn his left ankle while trying to get back to the second base bag after over-rounding it. He stayed down for a short time before being helped to the dugout by manager Charlie Manuel and a team trainer.

X-rays taken on Howard's elbow and ankle were negative according to the team. The Phillies have a day off on Monday before opening a three-game set at Florida on Tuesday.
