ANAHEIM, Calif. -- The Boston Red Sox activated catcher Victor Martinez from the 15-day disabled list Monday after a month-long absence.

Martinez broke his left thumb during a June 27 game against the Giants when a foul tip grazed his glove. He had been sidelined ever since, though the injury did not require surgery.

The Red Sox went 9-13 in Martinez's absence and won Monday's game, 6-3, as the backstop went 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Martinez, who was acquired from Cleveland at last year's trade deadline, is hitting .288 with nine homers and 39 runs batted in this season for the Red Sox.

Boston also outrighted first baseman Aaron Bates and optioned catcher Dusty Brown to Triple-A Pawtucket on Monday.
