Phoenix, AZ - San Francisco Giants outfielder Eugenio Velez was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with a head contusion and concussion suffered as a result of being hit by a foul ball during Saturday's game against Arizona.

During the top of the fourth inning, the Giants' Pat Burrell fouled a ball toward the San Francisco dugout. The ball smacked Velez, who fell to the ground.

After being attended to by trainers, he was put on a stretcher and taken to a local hospital, where he remained Sunday.

So far this season, Velez is hitting .196 with two homers and eight RBI in 21 games.

The Giants also recalled infielder Ryan Rohlinger from Triple-A Fresno.

Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval flew back home to Venezuela following last Saturday's game to take care of a personal matter. He is expected to return Tuesday when Giants host Florida.
