Denver - The Boston Red Sox activated Daisuke Matsuzaka from the 15-day disabled list for Thursday's start against the Colorado Rockies.

Matsuzaka has been sidelined since June 12, when he was scratched from a start against Philadelphia after straining his right forearm while warming up.

It was the second DL stint of the year for the right-hander, who missed the first 23 games with a strained neck.

He is 5-2 with a 4.59 earned run average in eight starts.

To make room for Matsuzaka, the Red Sox placed third baseman Mike Lowell on the 15-day DL with a strained right hip, the same hip he had surgery on following the 2008 season.

Lowell is batting .213 with two homers and 12 RBI in 31 games
